The Art of Oaxaca
Six days of food, art, mezcal & local traditions
For six days, we’ll experience Día de Muertos through the people and traditions that give it meaning.
We’ll cook mole negro in the home of a traditional Oaxacan chef, walk through agave fields with a mezcal-making family, spend time in a textile studio, build an ofrenda with our hosts, and experience the celebrations unfolding throughout Oaxaca.
This isn’t a trip built around watching from the sidelines. You’ll cook, taste, learn, make things, meet people, and take part in what’s happening around you.

Sample Itinerary
Here’s what six days in Oaxaca with us can look like.
DAY 1Welcome to Oaxaca
Arrive in Oaxaca and settle into the hotel. The afternoon is yours to unpack, rest after your flight, or head out and start exploring the neighborhood at your own pace.
That evening, we’ll meet for our first dinner together over traditional Oaxacan food and get to know the people we’ll be traveling with for the next six days.
Meals included: Dinner
DAY 2Eat Your Way Through Oaxaca
Take the morning at your own pace before we head into Oaxaca’s historic center for an afternoon centered around one of the best parts of being here: the food.
With a local guide, we’ll make our way through the city, stopping at four different spots to taste more than 15 traditional foods and drinks while learning about the ingredients, traditions, and stories behind them.
Afterward, we’ll visit a pottery studio to learn about the craft and the people keeping it alive in Oaxaca.
Meals included: Breakfast + food tour tastings
DAY 3Cooking, Ofrendas & Día de Muertos
After breakfast, the morning is yours before we head out for our Día de Muertos activities.
In the afternoon, we’ll visit the home of a traditional Oaxacan chef, where we’ll gather ingredients for our mole negro cooking class and flowers for the ofrenda we’ll build together. We’ll cook, have Oaxacan hot chocolate and traditional bread, and sit down to dinner made from what we’ve prepared.
As evening falls, we’ll head to a cemetery to experience one of the most meaningful Día de Muertos traditions, as families gather to honor and remember loved ones who have passed.
Meals included: Breakfast + dinner
DAY 4Mezcal & Life in a Zapotec Village
Today we’ll head outside Oaxaca City to spend the day in a Zapotec village, beginning with a traditional breakfast of hot chocolate and sweet bread.
From there, we’ll visit a family-run mezcal producer, walk through the agave fields, and learn how mezcal is made from the people who have been producing it for generations. And, of course, we’ll taste a few along the way.
Afterward, we’ll return to the village for lunch before heading back to Oaxaca.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch
DAY 5From Natural Dyes to Barbacoa
We’ll spend the morning at a textile studio learning how natural dyes are made and the role they play in Oaxaca’s textile traditions. We’ll see the techniques behind the colors and learn about a craft that has been passed down through generations.
After lunch and some time to enjoy the afternoon, we’ll come together for our final evening: a traditional barbacoa dinner hosted by a local family.
It’s our last dinner together and a chance to share one more meal before the trip comes to an end.
Meals included: Breakfast + dinner
DAY 6Until Next Time
We’ll have breakfast together until it’s time to say goodbye to Oaxaca. Private transportation to the airport is included, so all you need to do is pack your bags and head home.
Meals included: Breakfast
Is this trip for you?
Here's what to know about the pace, style, and kind of traveler this trip is designed for.-
Travelers should be comfortable walking and standing for extended periods. Oaxaca’s historic center has cobblestone and uneven streets, and during Día de Muertos, crowds and street closures can make walking the easiest way to get around. Some days may include 10 to 15 city blocks of walking between our hotel, restaurants, and activities.
Some days and evenings can be long, with several hours spent on your feet. There are breaks along the way, and the trip does not include strenuous hiking or highly physical activities, but a reasonable level of mobility and stamina is important.
If you have questions about mobility or activity level, please contact us before booking.
-
This is a small group cultural trip designed to experience Oaxaca beyond the typical tourist highlights. Our days center around food, traditions, artisans, local communities, and the celebrations surrounding Día de Muertos.
The itinerary includes a mix of planned experiences and free time to explore on your own. We keep our groups small and leave room for the unexpected, so flexibility is part of the experience.
During Día de Muertos, crowds, traffic, celebrations, and street closures can sometimes change the timing of our day or how we move through the city.
-
This trip is a great fit for travelers who are curious about Mexican culture, excited to experience local food and traditions, and interested in understanding Día de Muertos beyond what you might experience as a visitor passing through.
Solo travelers, friends, and couples are all welcome. You do not need to know anyone before joining the trip.
You’ll enjoy this experience most if you’re comfortable traveling with a small group, open to trying new things, and willing to go with the flow when plans shift. Día de Muertos is an incredibly busy and lively time in Oaxaca, so a little flexibility goes a long way.
