The Art of Oaxaca:
From Forest to Table
Six days of food, art, & seasonal traditions
For six days, we’ll explore Oaxaca through its food, art, and traditions, spending time with the people who keep them alive.
We’ll learn traditional pottery techniques from the women of Mujeres de Barro Rojo, eat our way through Oaxaca’s markets and streets, visit a mezcal-making family in Santiago Matatlán, and spend time with textile artisans in Teotitlán del Valle. We’ll also head into the mountains with a local chef to forage for wild mushrooms, then cook a meal together with what we’ve gathered.
There’s time to explore Oaxaca City on your own too. But much of this trip happens beyond the city, in workshops, kitchens, in a forest, and family-run spaces where we can meet the people behind what we eat, drink, and make.

I’ve led multiple group trips here, and over the years I’ve gotten to know Oaxaca through the people, food, traditions, and communities we spend time with on this trip.
I’ll be there throughout the journey, taking care of the details, keeping things running behind the scenes, and making sure you can focus on enjoying Oaxaca and everything we have planned.

DAY 1Welcome to Oaxaca
Arrive in Oaxaca and settle into the hotel. The afternoon is yours to unpack, rest after your flight, or head out and start exploring the neighborhood at your own pace.
That evening, we’ll meet for our first dinner together over traditional Oaxacan food and get to know the people we’ll be traveling with for the next six days.
Meals included: Dinner
DAY 2Clay, Markets & Oaxacan Food
We’ll start the morning with the women of Mujeres de Barro Rojo, learning about their red clay pottery and the techniques passed down through generations.
In the afternoon, we’ll explore Oaxaca City through its food. With a local guide, we’ll make our way through markets and neighborhood spots, stopping at four places to taste more than 15 traditional foods and drinks while learning about the ingredients, traditions, and people behind them.
Meals included: Breakfast + food tour tastings
DAY 3Mezcal & Life in a Zapotec Village
Today we’ll head outside Oaxaca City to Santiago Matatlán, where we’ll spend the day with a family that has been making mezcal for generations.
We’ll begin with a traditional breakfast of hot chocolate and sweet bread before visiting the family's palenque. We'll walk through the agave fields, learn how mezcal is made, and hear firsthand about the work and traditions behind it. There will be plenty of opportunities to taste mezcal along the way.
Afterward, we’ll enjoy lunch in the village before returning to Oaxaca City.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch
DAY 4The Weavers of Teotitlan
We’ll spend the day in Teotitlán del Valle, a village known for its weaving traditions.
At a local textile studio, we’ll learn how wool is prepared, how natural dyes are made from plants and other materials, and how the colors and patterns come together on traditional looms.
We’ll spend time with the artisans, hear about their work, and get a closer look at a craft that continues to be an important part of life in the village.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch
DAY 5From Forest to Table & Farewell Dinner
We’ll head into the mountains outside Oaxaca City with a local chef to forage for wild mushrooms. Along the way, we’ll learn about the varieties that grow in the region and their place in Oaxacan cooking.
Afterward, we’ll join the chef in the kitchen to prepare a meal with the mushrooms we’ve gathered, then sit down to enjoy it together.
In the evening, we’ll return to Oaxaca City for our farewell dinner.
Meals included: Breakfast + lunch + dinner
Wild mushroom foraging depends on weather and seasonal availability. The itinerary may be adjusted if conditions are unsuitable.

Is this trip for you?
Here's what to know about the pace, style, and kind of traveler this trip is designed for.-
This trip involves walking through Oaxaca City's streets and markets, including cobblestones and uneven sidewalks. Some days involve extended periods of standing or walking, with breaks throughout.
Our wild mushroom foraging experience includes an approximately 30-minute walk each way between our starting point and the forest, plus additional walking while foraging with a local guide. The terrain may be uneven, muddy, or slippery during the rainy season.
Travelers should feel comfortable walking on uneven ground and spending several hours on their feet. No strenuous hiking is planned, although the pace and terrain of the foraging excursion will depend on local conditions.
-
This is a small-group cultural trip focused on experiencing Oaxaca beyond the usual tourist stops. We'll spend time with local artisans, explore markets, learn about regional traditions, share meals, and venture into the mountains for a seasonal foraging experience.
Our days include a mix of planned experiences and time to explore on your own. There's a schedule, but we don't rush from one attraction to the next. We keep our groups small and leave room for the unexpected.
Travel also requires some flexibility, especially during Oaxaca's rainy season. Weather, traffic, and other local circumstances can occasionally change our plans. We'll take care of the logistics and keep you informed along the way.
-
This trip is for curious travelers who want to experience Oaxaca through its people, food, art, and traditions. People who enjoy wandering through markets, trying something they've never eaten before, meeting local makers, and learning the stories behind the places they visit.
Solo travelers, friends, and couples are all welcome. You don't need to know anyone before joining. Part of the experience is getting to know the people you're traveling with, too.
You'll feel right at home if you enjoy traveling with a small group, are open to new experiences, and appreciate a balance of planned activities and time to yourself. A little curiosity, an open mind, and a willingness to go with the flow go a long way.
